I slept great at the swankiest motel in Bieber, then I cruised over to the Big Valley Market for a cheap, hearty breakfast. I was lucky enough to share a table, THE table, the ONLY table, with a family of five Big Valleyans. The kids were fun and the parents were friendly. This was a pleasant start of a most excellent day.
Just outside of Bieber is the even smaller and more crumbly town of Nubieber. There was one little house on the highway that appeared to be still occupied. A hand-painted sign read "For Sale: one old man, any reasonable offer accepted." Hahahaha! I might try that when I get home.
After Nubieber was a long, steady climb up to Big Valley summit - a lungbuster, but I managed it pretty well. The reward was a long, fast, curving descent with views of Lassen Peak and all the volcanic mountains on the way to Mt. Shasta. This was a fun ride on good road with a decent shoulder, blasting along at 30 mph.
Pretty soon I reached the turnoff to wind my way into the forest to visit old friends Renee and Kevin and their three cool, stairstep, athletic boys. We spent the afternoon sitting in the shade telling stories, drinking ice water, watching the boys ride their bikes on their new little bmx track, and solving some of the world's most pressing issues.
What a nice, easy-going Sunday in some of the prettiest country in California. I can't thank this awesome family enough for their friendship and accommodation. A spaghetti dinner, a hot shower, and a comfortable bed in their spare room topped it off. Exactly where was I, you ask? None of your beeswax, nosy!
Peace and Love from an Undisclosed Location in Lassen County,
Jim
